The guiding statement of mission when Global Arts applied for (2004) and was subsequently approved (2007) for full Non-Profit Organization status in Massachusetts, encompassed both translation of artistic works and promotion of living Romanian musicians and artists, as well as educational and promotional activities to present Mihai Eminescu, Romania’s national poet, to English speakers.
In service of those dual intentions, Global Arts began a series of presentations and educational events and sponsored publications encompassing short stories, poetry, plays, memoirs and children’s books. A revised volume of Eminescu’s poetry by Adrian G. Sahlean, with accompanying audio CD showcasing a reading of the poems set to music performed expressly for the project, appeared in 2006. A further revision of the volume was published in Romania in 2015, as was the author’s behind-the-scenes look at the intricacies of translating Eminescu into meter and rhyme, Migolosul Cronofag. The awards won by these volumes are detailed elsewhere.
Now that Mr. Sahlean’s volume, The Legend of the Evening Star and Selected Poems, has been chosen for the prestigious Translation and Publication Support Program (TSP) of the Romanian Cultural Institute, Global Arts will be devoting the majority of its outreach program and will be engaging in fundraising in support of its activities, to present this unique volume to the English speaking world. We will continue our support of living artists and the other publications already available, but do not anticipate further translation activities.
The RCI initiative includes a book launch, speaking engagements at conferences and seminars, and related promotional activities. Global Arts will integrate its activities with the RCI and the publishing house, and focus on library placement of the volume, promoting classroom presentations focused on Eminescu, and spreading the word about this volume to interested individuals. These activities are time-intensive and require substantial funds to implement. Global Arts will, therefore, request money and other kinds of help in its outreach. Included will be grant proposals made to institutions that offer assistance to organizations such as ours.
Those who wish to donate funds will be furnished with the appropriate certificate of a Tax Deductible Donation upon request. Those who wish to volunteer their time and expertise in assisting Global Arts will have several activities to choose from. A Facebook initiative in support of this mission will be established and administered by Global Arts, as a means of keeping supporters updated on events and receiving feedback about our outreach.
Links to all these resources, events and volunteer activities will be displayed prominently on the Global Arts website.
