April 11, Bucharest Romania - Conference at the Romanian National Library on the translation of Shakespearean sonnets into Romanian. Mr. Sahlean was invited to talk about the lexical and prosodic equivalences between English and Romanian that have occasioned remarkable Romanian versions of the Bard's sonnets. The recitation of Sonnets CXVI and CXXX in both languages was used to illustrate the musicality of the renditions.
April 12-14, Bucharest, Romania - Participation at the Shakespeare Symposium organized by the Romanian Academy and the National Museum of Romanian Literature. The topics of the international conference included 'Shakespeare translations - national and international approaches.' Mr. Sahlean presented the paper 'Shakespeare and Eminescu - Measure for Measure'. The paper compared the characteristics of English and Romanian and used the analogy of successful transcriptions between musical instruments as a model for improved translations from Eminescu into English.
April 14-23, Craiova, Romania - Participation at the international biannual Shakespeare Festival. Apart from theater performances, the festival gathered Shakespeare scholars from around the world who held presentations during daily seminars on varied topics including 'trends in Shakespeare studies', 'small and big screen Shakespeare', 'early and modern stage', a.s.o. Mr. Sahlean presentation explored 'How Fit is Romanian for translating Shakespeare?'
April 21, Bucharest, Romania - Meeting with Valentin Ajder - Chief Editor of Eikon Press who proposed a Romanian edition of the bilingual volume 'Eminescu - Eternal Longing, Impossible Love / Eternul Dor, Imposibila Iubire', a 2006 Global Arts project. The book was planned to be ready for the annual Mihai Eminescu Festival that takes place at the poet's birthplace in Ipotesti.
April 25, Bucharest, Romania - Meeting with Radu Boureanu, President of the Romanian Cultural Center to discuss better strategies for promoting the poetry of Mihai Eminescu - the most unknown great national poet. A project for Eminescu recitals by Mr. Sahlean in various European cities, as well as American and Canadian, was planned.
May 19, Bucharest, Romania - Publication of Mr. Sahlean's paper Shakespeare and Eminescu - Measure for Measure' held at the International Shakespeare Symposium by Fitralit, the Review of Romanian Writers Union's Department of Literary Translations.
June 15, Ipotesti, Romania. Ipotesti - Mr. Sahlean was awarded the 2016 Mihai Eminescu Grand Prize for his translations into English and promoting his work abroad. The Eikon edition of the bilingual volume Eminescu - Eternal Longing, Impossible Love was also launched on the occasion.
